A Glance at the Future of CAT Tools

Computer-aided translation (CAT) tools play a key role in optimising translation workflows and improving linguistic accuracy. But as the technology develops, we tried to imagine what advanced features might be introduced to such systems.

1) Dynamic predictive text

In human translation, where each letter is typed by hand, this feature would allow words to be selected from a special panel that guesses the entire input piece based on its beginning. For machine translation, it could also include a function of predictive word-by-word translation when the next word in the target language is offered.

2) Context-aware glossaries

Sometimes glossaries are not divided into specific groups and only cover the general topic (e.g. “technical terms”). In this case, they usually have several translations of the same term. Integrating contextual glossaries would enable the tools to make more accurate and relevant suggestions based on the broader context of the document being translated. This would also reduce visual clutter on the user interface.

3) Enhanced QA: linguistic accuracy

CAT software already uses various mechanisms to assess the linguistic integrity of translations. These include checking spelling, grammar and punctuation to ensure that the resulting text is grammatically and linguistically correct. However, it would be practical to put more emphasis on punctuation checking, which is not really applied by some systems. Another feature would be based on AI assessing whether the overall grammatical structure of a sentence/segment conforms to the norms of the target language.

4) Voice input

Introducing voice input would boost the usability of CAT tools, allow translators to work hands-free, and ultimately improve the efficiency of their workflow. This type of input also streamlines data entry and improves the user experience by being inclusive and providing a more adaptable work environment.

By offering a range of customisation options, CAT tools are paving the way for personalised and cutting-edge translation experiences. What features would you like to see in your preferred CAT system? Don’t hesitate to share with us!
