Desktop publishing involves page-by-page alignment of the translated text with the source. As a result, you get the document in another language but of the identical layout.
The length of words and sentences differs from language to language, and the same goes for the text orientation. That's why the designer has to correct tables, diagrams and figures, format margins, spaces and offsets, while also editing types and sizes of fonts.
Desktop publishing is required both for simple .doc or .pptx documents and for more complex files in CorelDRAW or Indesign formats, such as product catalogues or presentations of an intricate design.
Documents provided in .pdf or .jpeg formats will also need to undergo text recognition.
