Documents can be submitted for translation as editable or non-editable files. Non-editable file types, for example .pdf and .jpeg, need to undergo text recognition before a translator can start working on them in a CAT tool.
After translation, such files require typographic formatting, i.e. bringing the translated document into full compliance with the source one, while preserving all graphic elements, the page layout, and design.
Text recognition tools don't work on some languages, for example Hindi, Georgian or Bengali. They also can't process handwritten texts, or scanned documents of low quality. In such cases, it may be necessary to perform sight translation or convert the handwriting into text.
